This morning's session

Image
I had a very cute young lady in here this morning for some senior portraits. She brought along her best friend to be in some of them. As you can see, the friend was oh-so-excited to be here. Anyway, here are a couple of my favorites.

Stand-Outs

Image
I recently got some new samples of a product I call 'Stand-Outs' - portraits that are mounted on acrylic and cut out to stand up on a shelf or table top. They are just the neatest thing. Here's a pic of some of them sitting on my table here at the studio. They make wonderful gifts, and are just unusual enough to really catch your attention. I love them. Stop by the studio and see them for yourself. I promise you'll be as enraptured with them as I am.

What's Old is New Again

Image
First, the old. I had a client bring in some photos of her now-late husband, taken when he was a young man. A very handsome young man, by the way. One of the pictures was very badly damaged and part of it is missing. Luckily one of the other ones she brought me was intact enough for me to 'steal' his hair from and replace it in this photo restoration. She hasn't seen these yet but I'd venture a guess that she is going to be very happy with the results. I love PhotoShop! And, another client brought in a framed panorama picture of Yaquina Bay from 1936, when the bridge was brand new. What a wonderful picture it is, too, with no distortion of any kind. A marvel of photography even today, and it is from 71 years ago. He created his own panorama of the same bay from the very same location in 1980. It was neat to study those images, because those were my stomping grounds back in the early 80s. What he asked of me was to do a new panorama of the bay as it looks today from that...

Multiplicity

For something a little different, I've been creating these composite images of the high school seniors I've captured. They have been really popular, but they kinda tend to scare the parents just a little, I think... It must be the thought of having that many kids... Not sure on that. Anyway, I wanted to share a few with you and see what you think of them. You can view them as larger images if you click on them. Stephanie in the trees This is Kyle, the first composite I did. The bright colors really pop for me. This is Kevin, using the same tree as Kyle. This is Carson on the jetty. And Brittney in the woods. She reminds me of Sprites in this one. And Brittney in a tree at Ona Beach State Park, one of my favorite places to shoot portraits. I'm providing portrait services for the annual Charity Ball for the Children's Advocacy Center tonight. I'm looking forward to it.

What's New?

Image
First off, Happy Birthday to my sweet husband Eric. I love you. And now you're older than me... neener neener... Eric helped me with a High School Senior portrait session a couple of days ago. The weather here has been nothing short of spectacular, even though its been pretty cold at night. The sunset light is just so beautiful to work in. We used Newport's Yaquina Bay Bridge and south jetty for the settings. Here are a few of my favorite portraits of Carson. I hope you like them, too!

Everybody Wants You

Image
The song by Billy Squier keeps running through my head when I think about all the kitties who are trying to adopt me lately. There is a very pretty tabby mix with white paws who hangs around the studio and is getting very friendly. Not friendly enough that I have a picture of him/her yet, but enough that I can feed her and approach her and pet her. I've gotten her to come into the studio a couple of times, but Sissy has a fit and attacks her again and again until I let her escape. I call her Stripe. I believe she is female, and hope she has been spayed. I don't know what to do about her, I'd like for her to have a nice home but apparently it isn't going to be here, as long as Sissy rules the roost. Anyone out there want a nice kitty? Then there is Adonis. He has been hanging around the back door at home. He is absolutely gorgeous. And very friendly. Indy doesn't seem too put-off by him, so I don't know if she'll allow him to adopt me or not. He and Indy loo...

Geocaching and other delights

Image
Our part of the state has escaped relatively unharmed in the recent winter weather events. We had some snow, and some ice but nothing like the Willamette Valley experienced. Eric and I went geocaching last weekend, and ended up walking the mile-long snowy trail to the top of Communications Hill at Yaquina Head. We found the cache and logged our visit, then enjoyed the view from the highest point in the vicinity. It was a clear and beautiful afternoon, albeit pretty chilly. We stayed to watch the sunset. Eric shot these beautiful pictures during our jaunt. Pink mist I love the variations in color in this shot.... The tiny size of the boat against the enormity of the ocean and land mass... The lighthouse was just renovated and restored to its original colors... it looks gorgeous. If you've never heard of, or never experienced geocaching, I highly recommend it. Get yourself an inexpensive GPS unit - I saw one the other day for about $100, and get in on this treasure hunt. It...

Snow Day

Image
I finally got out this morning after a few false starts and captured some images of the beautiful snowy scenes around the studio. Here are a few of my favorites. This is a detail shot of a metal sculpture/bench created by local aritsan Sam Briseño . Snow on holly This is my studio, shot from across the street and up the hill. You can see the crows that steal the cat food I put out for my furry little friends. I wanted to get over to the beach and do some shooting but I value my life and limb (and my car) too much to risk it. Maybe next time. Be careful out there!!

My Feline Friends

Image
I currently have 4 feline friends. I have a long-haired tabby at home, and she is my sole house-pet now. She is about 8½ years old, and I’ve had her since she was about a month old. She came into my life on the third of July, 1998. I was working at a car dealership in Newport at the time, and a customer came onto the lot, in a small pickup truck, drunk, and threw this poor, tiny little kitten out onto the pavement because she had pooped in his truck. So that was the last time he ever saw her. Because of the date, I named her “Independence” and call her Indy. She played second fiddle to Toby for about 6 years, and when he died, she really started to come out of her shell. She is now ruler of the house, and is playful, affectionate and gorgeous. And she seems very happy. Whenever I am sitting, she is on my lap, and she sleeps on the bed with us, too. Simon came into my life when I moved the studio to its current location. He belonged to my neighbor and he was left behind when ...

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Image
As we change over our annual calendars, it is natural that we humans consider the changes that have come to pass in the old year, and ones we want to make, or foresee coming our way in the new year. I, of course, am no exception. There have been LOTS of changes in my life in the past year, and I foresee a lot more of them ahead in 2007. I have decided to take one more day a week off. The studio will be closed on Sundays and Mondays, starting next week. I’ve been neglecting myself and my household for the last year or more, and need to have two days off a week. Period. I’ve decided to make this blog more about me, and not just about my job and my business. So you’ll see more posts of a personal note here. Like this one. I had to put my dog down yesterday. She was over 17 years old, and had spent 16½ of them by my side. She was a wonderful, smart, energetic and enthusiastic little girl, and I loved her dearly. But, at 17 human years, she was at an equivalent of 140 – if you count...

Santa and the Children

Image
The visit from Santa this past Saturday was a rousing success. Lots of kids came by to say 'hi' to the big guy, and we got scads of wonderful portraits. Here are some of my favorites. It was hard to choose just a few. I like how brother is explaining to Santa what is on his wish-list, while sister gives the camera that devilish grin... This one is just too cute for words... And this one is just a treasure.

The importance of capturing moments in time…

I’ve always known that photographs are important. We are able to capture moments in time and keep them available for us to revisit at our whim. As time goes on, they become more important to us, to the point that if people are threatened with having to evacuate their homes in a hurry, one of the things they grab is their collection of photographs. It has been driven home to me even more so in the last few weeks. I posted some of my favorite images of Rachel here . I was hired to create her senior portraits and we did so on the last day of August of this year. Rachel graduated high school early, and at 17 was a freshman in college. She had a lot going for her: looks, brains, personality, a large family who loved her, and many friends. Rachel lost her life in a vehicle crash on November 18th just outside of Bend, where she was attending college. All of a sudden, the beautiful images I captured of her that day are so much more precious. I don’t mean monetarily, I mean in heart-valu...

If a picture is worth a thousand words...

Image
'nuff said. Last night Eric and I went out to the Oregon Coast Aquarium's Sea of Lights event. It was a lot of fun. We both got some really great shots of the people and animals out there, I'm sure you'll see some of those on both of our blogs in the next couple of days. Here is one of my favorites. We celebrated the fourth anniversary of our first date the same way we have every year, by doing the same things we did on our first date. Out to dinner at the same restaurant, then to the Sea of Lights. Happy Anniversary, ya old crab. I loves ya. I had the honor today of capturing some really great pictures of a friend of ours and his son, who are both volunteers at our local fire department. Here are some of my favorites. Have a great weekend!

Another cover photo

Image
Jefferson Monthly, the magazine of the Jefferson Public Radio Listeners Guild , published one of my photos on their November cover. They also used a couple of smaller images in the story inside. Woo hoo!! It's always so exciting to see one (or more) of my images in print... in thousands of copies...
